Jacksonville, Florida, native Speed Williams reached his first NFR in 1988 as a heeler, roping with Casey Cox. He later switched to heading, the position that would define his best-known championship partnership.
Williams and heeler Rich Skelton won eight consecutive team roping world championships from 1997 through 2004. Their NFR performances included six round wins in 1999 and the average title in 2001, combining speed with repeated success across the finals.
The header sets up the run, while the heeler completes the catch. Williams became associated with a fast approach and a distinctive rope swing. His 2024 Icons recognition celebrates his contribution within the partnership, while Skelton’s separate biography tells the other side of the same championship era.
Vegas NFR Icons recognition year: 2024. This identifies the honor, not a championship season or a scheduled 2026 competition appearance.
