A first title in the first Las Vegas NFR

Joe Beaver grew up in Victoria, Texas, and began roping as a child. In 1985, at age twenty, he earned PRCA Rookie of the Year honors and arrived at the first Las Vegas NFR as its youngest tie-down roper. He left with a world championship.

Eight world titles across two categories

Beaver’s career ultimately produced five tie-down roping world crowns and three all-around titles. His Las Vegas story includes a comeback after injuries limited his 1999 competition season, when he instead appeared at the NFR as a television commentator.

Returning to win, then sharing the sport

He returned to take his third all-around title in 2000 and entered the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2002. Commentary and teaching clinics became additional parts of his contribution. The 2024 Icons class recognized a career that connected competing, explaining and passing on the sport.

Vegas NFR Icons recognition year: 2024. This identifies the honor, not a championship season or a scheduled 2026 competition appearance.
