A Montana rider reaches the finals

Billings, Montana, native Dan Mortensen first qualified for the NFR in 1990, the year he earned PRCA Rookie of the Year recognition. The finals became a recurring destination across a career that produced sixteen qualifications.

Six bronc titles and an all-around crown

Mortensen won saddle bronc world championships in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998 and 2003. He also took the 1997 all-around title. His six bronc crowns matched Casey Tibbs’s celebrated total and connected two eras of the discipline.

Longevity under pressure

A late-season broken ankle kept him out of the 2004 NFR after he had led the standings. During his final championship season in 2003, he became the first roughstock competitor to pass $2 million in career earnings. The 2025 Icons class recognized the depth of that Las Vegas record.
