Billy Etbauer grew up in Huron, South Dakota, as the middle of three accomplished bronc-riding brothers. He qualified for the NFR in 1989, his second professional season, and began a sequence of twenty-one consecutive appearances.
Etbauer won saddle bronc world titles in 1992, 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2004. The record combined a willingness to pursue high-scoring rides with enough consistency to keep returning to the finals over two decades.
His Las Vegas highlights include a 93-point ride on Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Cool Alley in 2003 and another 93-point performance in the closing round of 2004, when he secured his final world title. His 2023 Icons recognition reflects both the peak performances and the length of his connection with NFR audiences.
Vegas NFR Icons recognition year: 2023. This identifies the honor, not a championship season or a scheduled 2026 competition appearance.
