An eight-time world champion whose roping achievements and historic all-around title made him a defining figure in Las Vegas rodeo.

| ProRodeo Hall of Fame | 2004 |
Raised in Cypress, Texas, Fred Whitfield developed his roping skills from childhood. His professional career made him the first African-American cowboy to win the PRCA all-around world championship, an achievement with significance beyond a single season’s standings.
Whitfield collected seven tie-down roping world titles and one all-around crown. At the 1997 NFR, he completed ten head in 84.0 seconds to win the aggregate. That performance remains a central episode in the story of his career and his connection with the Las Vegas arena.
Fans also came to recognize his celebratory “raise the roof” gesture after successful runs. His ProRodeo Hall of Fame induction followed in 2004. Recognition in the 2026 Vegas NFR Icons class honors both his competitive record and the broader place he earned in the sport.
Vegas NFR Icons recognition year: 2026. This identifies the honor, not a championship season or a scheduled 2026 competition appearance.
